Becoming a Recruitment Consultant
Why did you choose recruitment as a career?
I fell into recruitment consultancy completely by accident. I was made redundant after 10 years of sales experience in Malta. I took some time to myself to recharge the batteries, spend quality time with the wife and kids and eventually realised that I couldn’t stay off work forever, both financially speaking and mentally. There are only so many times my mind could handle the baby shark song being played… I saw the job posting on LinkedIn and realised that there was a potential to earn good money and grow within a progressive company that was willing to invest in me so I thought why not, let’s apply.
Why did you become a recruitment consultant?
I wanted to work in an environment where I could make a good income based on my effort. The opportunity to grow my professional skills was very appealing. I knew I would be starting at the bottom and would need to work my way to the top again.
How did you end up working as a Recruiter for Accelerate?
Through good LinkedIn job posting, got my attention applied. I met the Malta team and the manager, and some of the partners and the rest is history. I could see the potential in the role for me and I’ve been building my skills as a recruitment consultant daily since I joined.
What do you find the most rewarding and challenging things about recruitment?
Rewarding for me it’s primarily the financial side, the chance to earn what you are worth after a month’s solid graft. Truthfully though it’s being part of the team. The team is really friendly and teamwork is a great part of Accelerate Recruitment. Seeing the company grow and progress and take massive steps forward and knowing you are part of that is incredibly rewarding. Seeing my teammates do well overall and being able to share in each other’s success is rewarding.
The most challenging part of being a recruiter is the mental changes needed for me. Looking at the big picture rather than just what’s right in front of me. It is a multi-tasking type position. I’m writing job postings, marketing, talking to candidates, speaking with clients. It is a real balancing act managing the recruitment process. Keeping on top of all the quality roles I am working on and not getting too disappointed or downhearted when I am not able to fill a vacancy.
What do you think makes Accelerate Recruitment different from other organisations?
For me, it’s openness. Any issues or any concerns the minute you address them with the management all the way to the top, they listen, take it on board, and then they try to take the feedback on board and then make the relevant changes. Nothing is too big or small and our opinions are listened to. You feel valued and part of the big picture even when you first join the team, everyone makes themselves available to you both in Malta and Ireland.
What skills have you developed through your journey with Accelerate Recruitment?
My recruiting skills are constantly being honed and improved day by day. It’s hard to say, you learn so much from spending time with client companies, speaking with candidates and job seekers. There is constant training that’s on offer it’s a continuous positive cycle.
What are you looking forward to in the future (work-related)?
Growing internally and one day hopefully being in a position of management. Breaking targets and goals are a must. Looking especially forward to skiing next year on the company trip with both the Malta and Ireland teams.
How do you find balance in your life?
Work hard during the week and then switch off in the evening and weekends by spending time with my beautiful family, nothing is more important than them and they are my reason to work hard during the week.
What do you do to relax?
Relax? I have two young kids. I come to work to relax. 😊
