What Key Experience is Required within Legal Roles in Malta?

Experience varies in this sector depending on what specialisation you are job searching in.

Corporate and Commercial law is generally the key experience to have as it can be applied to most industries. A background in corporate and commercial law will provide transferable skills to new industries.

Also, previous experience in other regulated industries such as iGaming, insurance and financial services is also sought after. Companies typically look for candidates that have experience within different regulations as these industries are heavily regulated. Many companies are also willing to train candidates in specific industries, but previous experience within the industry you are looking to join is preferred and you will hold an advantage.

What does the Career Journey look like for Legal Candidates?

Due to the demand for legal professionals and legal talent, there are excellent career progression opportunities in this sector in Malta. Depending on if you want to progress in a law firm or not, there are many career paths you can take in this market.

We also have opportunities for people with a legal background from other markets and there are jobs in areas such as compliance.

By joining a law firm in a junior or mid-level position, you can make progress within the firm. Once you progress into Senior Associate, there is also room to become a Partner and different Partner structures are depending on the firm.

By working in other industries you will often see other structures. Most companies offer opportunities to grow into managerial roles such as Legal Manager and further to Head of Legal. Depending on the size of the company, you can also take the path from Senior Legal Counsel to Head of Legal. Some companies offer progression from the Head of Legal to Legal Director or Chief Legal Officer.

There is also the possibility to make career transitions such as working in a law firm and moving in-house or opposite. The position you can move into is usually depending on the amount of knowledge you can bring to the company.

What are the Key Certifications for Legal Professionals in Malta?

For a lawyer to join a law firm in Malta, hiring teams will look for any new hire to have a Law Degree from the University of Malta and a warrant to practice as an advocate and work in legal services. The warrant requires Maltese language skills given that the exams and court are both conducted in Maltese. If you are a specialist lawyer in a sector and don’t require court work, a Master’s Degree in Law will also suffice.

There are also additional specialised Master’s degrees that can be taken to give you an edge in the market, for example, taking a Master focusing purely in one field of law such as a Masters’s in Corporate & Commercial Law or a Masters’s in Banking & Finance Law. All these specialised master’s programmes can be applied to relevant practice fields and students undertaking them will have many opportunities in Malta on completion.
